Tragic Multi-Vehicle Collision in Washington County Claims Life of Young Marathon Trainee
Hurricane, Utah – A devastating chain-reaction crash on State Route 59 near Hurricane, Utah, has claimed the life of a 24-year-old local resident and left a motorcyclist in critical condition. The incident, which occurred on Friday, May 1, 2026, at approximately 9:39 a.m., was triggered by an unidentified driver who fled the scene after performing a high-speed illegal pass.
The Sequence of the Crash
The disaster began near milepost 14 when a black passenger car traveling eastbound attempted to pass slower traffic by entering oncoming lanes at a high rate of speed. To avoid a head-on collision with this vehicle, the driver of a westbound Chevrolet Avalanche swerved onto the right shoulder. However, in an attempt to regain control, the driver overcorrected, causing the Avalanche to slide back across the road and into eastbound traffic.
The out-of-control Avalanche broadsided a Chevrolet Malibu on the driver’s side. The impact forced the Malibu off the roadway and down a small embankment. A motorcyclist following the Malibu attempted an evasive maneuver to the left but collided with a Jeep Wrangler and was thrown from his bike, landing on the northbound side of the highway.
Victims and Impact
Authorities and family members have identified the individuals most severely affected by the tragedy:
- Dallin Mangelson (24): The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries but later passed away. A resident of Washington County and a professional welder, Mangelson was the youngest of five siblings and was actively training for his first marathon. His family remembers him as a source of “light and joy”.
- Jared Fredrickson: The motorcyclist was transported by ground ambulance in critical condition. Fredrickson was reportedly participating in his annual “Red Rock Recovery Ride” to celebrate his sobriety at the time of the accident.
- Other Injuries: Two additional individuals involved in the collision were hospitalized with injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Ongoing Investigation
The driver of the black passenger car responsible for initiating the fatal sequence of events did not stop and has yet to be located. The Utah Highway Patrol and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the four-vehicle and one-motorcycle wreck.
Public Appeal: Officials are urging anyone with information regarding the black passenger car or its driver to contact local authorities immediately.
