Fatal Rollover Accident on I-80 Near Battle Mountain
Authorities have released details regarding a single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Crescent Valley woman on Tuesday afternoon. The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is currently leading the investigation into the incident, which occurred just east of Battle Mountain.
Incident Summary
- Location: Interstate 80 (IR-80), eastbound of Battle Mountain, Nevada.
- Date & Time: Tuesday, at approximately 1:41 p.m.
- Victim: Traci Lynette Edgington, 60, of Crescent Valley, NV.
- Vehicle: A green Mazda Tribute.
Detailed Sequence of Events
Based on the preliminary findings by state troopers, the accident followed a series of over-corrections that led to the vehicle overturning:
- Initial Drift: While traveling westbound in the “fast” (left) lane, the Mazda Tribute drifted out of its lane and entered the center median.
- Over-Correction Right: The driver attempted to correct the path by steering sharply to the right. This caused the vehicle to sweep back across the fast lane and into the “slow” (right) lane.
- Hard Steering Left: In a second attempt to regain control, the driver steered hard back to the left.
- Rollover: The momentum of the high-speed steering maneuver caused the vehicle to lose stability. The Mazda entered the median once more, where it overturned before ultimately coming to a rest on its wheels.
Aftermath and Investigation
Emergency responders transported Ms. Edgington to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries; however, she was tragically pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
This incident represents the eighth fatal crash investigated by the NHP within the Elko region so far in 2026.
