Amarillo Violent Crime Surge Investigations Continue After String of Deadly Shootings
AMARILLO, TX — The Amarillo Police Department (APD) remains on high alert this weekend as investigators continue to track leads in a series of violent incidents that have plagued the city over the past several weeks. While no major shootings were reported in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, the community is still reeling from a violent spring that has seen multiple fatalities and injuries across the Texas Panhandle.
Recent Weekend Violence
The current investigation stems back to a particularly bloody weekend on March 22, 2026, where APD responded to three separate shooting scenes within a matter of hours. Those incidents, which occurred in both Potter and Randall Counties, left multiple victims dead and several others fighting for their lives in local hospitals.
One of the most notable scenes occurred near 29th Avenue and Dallas Street, where security footage captured a chaotic exchange of gunfire. APD has since confirmed that while several persons of interest were detained, at least one suspect remains at large.
Victims and Identification
Authorities have been cautious with the release of victim names in the most recent cases to protect ongoing investigations. However, in related nightclub violence earlier this year, victims like 25-year-old John Love Louima were identified following a mass shooting on South Polk Street. In that case, suspects Robert Kenney Knox and Nahryah Hilesta Ines Hayes were charged with murder and multiple counts of deadly conduct.
Police are currently looking for any information regarding the identity of the shooter involved in the March 22 Dallas Street incident.
Police Response and Community Safety
“We are utilizing every resource available, including our Homicide Unit and Crime Prevention Unit, to stem this tide of violence,” an APD spokesperson stated during a recent press briefing.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially in high-traffic entertainment districts. Local officials have noted that many of these shootings appear to stem from verbal altercations that escalate rapidly.
