Fatal High-Speed Crash and Fire Investigation at Multnomah Athletic Club Explosive Device Discovered
A major investigation is currently underway in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, following a violent and fatal incident in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The Incident
At approximately 2:49 a.m., emergency responders from Portland Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC), located at 1849 Southwest Salmon Street. Upon arrival, crews discovered a vehicle had crashed through the front entrance of the historic social club and was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze, but unfortunately, one person was located deceased inside the vehicle. The severity of the impact and subsequent fire caused significant damage to the club’s entrance turnaround.
Explosive Device Discovery
The situation escalated when authorities discovered evidence of an explosive device within the wreckage. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was immediately called to the scene to assess the threat. As of this afternoon, the EDU continues to investigate the nature of the device and whether it was intended for a targeted attack.
Victim Information
As of Saturday evening, the identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released by the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office. In accordance with standard protocol, authorities are waiting to notify the next of kin before making the victim’s name public.
Location & Traffic Impact
The incident occurred at the main entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club, a prominent landmark overlooking the Providence Park soccer stadium. Several blocks have been cordoned off to facilitate the investigation:
- Southwest 18th Avenue is closed from Taylor Street to Madison Street.
- Southwest 20th Avenue is closed from Morrison Street to Madison Street.
MAX light rail service in the area was disrupted for several hours this morning but has since resumed.
A Pattern of Incidents?
Notably, this marks the second time in less than a month that a vehicle has struck the MAC. On April 8, 2026, a car hit a planter box and injured a security guard at the same location. However, investigators have stated there is currently no indication that the two events are related.
The Multnomah Athletic Club has canceled all scheduled programs and services until further notice. Anyone with information regarding this crash is urged to contact crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends during this time of tragic loss. We stand with our community in offering our sincere thoughts and prayers to all those affected.
