Norwich, CT Police have officially identified the individual involved in a fatal single-vehicle accident that occurred in Norwich last week. Authorities confirmed that 78-year-old Jacques Bertheau, a resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, was the sole occupant and driver during the late-night incident.

According to the crash report, the collision took place at approximately 10:48 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21. Bertheau was operating a 2004 Nissan Xterra northbound on Interstate 395 when the vehicle veered into the right shoulder. The SUV struck the Lawler Lane overpass before traveling off the roadway and coming to a final rest.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene near the Exit 18 off-ramp shortly after the impact. Despite their efforts, the driver succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. The structural integrity of the overpass was assessed following the strike, and the highway remained partially restricted for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

State police are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the lane. While the initial report has been released, officials are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the Xterra’s movements prior to the accident or who may have relevant dash-camera footage to contact Troop E in Montville.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends during this time of tragic loss. We stand with our community in offering our sincere thoughts and prayers to all those affected.
